Enhancing the biogas production and the treated effluent quality via an alternative Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) treatment process: Integration of thermal pretreatment and dewatering

چکیده
To address the limitations associated with disposal management and treatment process of POME, an alternative that consists eliminating cooling ponds integrating a pretreatment technology combined dewatering device was proposed. Since proposed has not been tested previously, objective this study is to investigate effect thermal solid loading alteration via on thermophilic continuous set up consisting upflow anaerobic sludge blanket – hollow centered packed bed (UASB-HCPB) bioreactor. It established best performing 40S:60L, which made 40% by volume POME settled solids 60% clarified liquid. Thermally pretreated 40S:60L had significantly enhanced biogas production, methane purity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological (BOD), total suspended (TSS) removal efficiencies. The reactor exhibited stability owing low volatile fatty acid/alkalinity ratio obtained throughout run. With capacity 5L, thermally achieved daily production 48L purity 77.2%. COD, BOD, TSS efficiencies were evaluated be 97.5, 95.1, 94.5%. performance due consistent concentration, allowed more effective mass transfer transport in medium. Meanwhile, promoted cell lysis, making intercellular organic matter readily available for bacteria consortium.

A Review of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (Pome) Water Treatment
Palm oil is one of the two most important vegetable oils in the world’s oil and fats market. The extraction and purification processes generate different kinds of waste generally known as palm oil mill effluent (POME). The environmental impact of POME cannot be over emphasized; hence the need for treatment measures to reduce these impacts before discharge. Therefore, this paper reviews the proc...
متن کاملThe Performance Evaluation of Anaerobic Methods for Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) Treatment: A Review
Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is an important source of inland water pollution when released into local rivers or lakes without treatment. In the process of palm oil milling, POME is generat‐ ed through sterilization of fresh oil palm fruit bunches, clarification of palm oil and effluent from hydro-cyclone operations [Borja et al.,1996a]. POME is a viscous brown liquid with fine suspended solid...
متن کاملDecolorisation of Biologically Treated Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) Using Adsorption Technique
An experimental study was conducted on the adsorption of color from biologically treated POME using palm kernel shell (PKS) and empty fruit bunches (EFB) as natural biosorbents, and activated carbon prepared from them by microwave and chemical activation with potassium hydroxide (KOH). BET surface area of all sorbents was determined and 1252 m 2 .g -1 was recorded for activated carbon prepared ...
متن کاملElectrocoagulation of Palm Oil Mill Effluent
Electrocoagulation (EC) is an electrochemical technique which has been employed in the treatment of various kinds of wastewater. In this work the potential use of EC for the treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME) was investigated. In a laboratory scale, POME from a factory site in Chumporn Province (Thailand) was subjected to EC using aluminum as electrodes and sodium chloride as supporting...
